Disenchanted with my career in corporate America, I decide to take a path less trodden. I bid adieu to the corporate world having only a tenuous plan in mind. After liquidating my belongings and freeing myself from almost all obligations, I set out with no reservations and no return date with little more than a backpack slung over my shoulder. For me, it was a unique reading experience, not only because I met the author, but also because it so happened that by the time the book reached me, I was facing a tough moment in life - a layoff. The somehow similar job situation brought me into the shoes of the author from the very beginning. I almost wanted to quit job seeking altogether and start a journey on my own. But we all know, such kind of experience only avails itself to the most unique and the bravest. But the not so courageous me was still able to make this extended journey into the most exotic worlds through the author's eyes and ears - to the beaches, the mountains, the lakes, the jungles and the cities, in hot, rainy, windy, or even snowy weathers, and more interestingly, to interact with the people on the road. Not only that, the author also made many insightful observations and opinionated comments throughout the book which I found most fascinating to read. They are facts backed up and well reasoned, yet still sometimes I need to forget that it is a Caucasian male making such comments in order to be as fair minded as he is. I read the last few pages of the book full of deep thoughts and respect when he reaches some fundamental topics such as happiness. This is not only a book for back packers/vacationers, but also for soul searchers. It is never too late the start the journey to understanding.Product details

The Journey to Understanding eBook Benjamin Schkrohowsky Reviews
Just finished reading the book. It is a well-written account of a backpackers experiences traveling in Latin America. It should be a great reading for future backpackers, to give them a taste of what to look forward to, and especially what to avoid. Also an endless number of travel destinations with their positive or negative recommendation. If your traveling is in the past, it may bring back memories of similar or not so similar experiences.
This was such an amazing story. The bravery of being able to let go of what society has laid out for you, follow your own destiny of discovery is in itself, something that many wish they could do. The book took me on adventures that I will never go on, but feel I was there. I wanted to thank Benjamin for taking that leap of faith, following his heart and embracing where ever it leads. I'm completely moved by his story and am hoping another book will be out soon!
What an amazing adventure! The author has an understated way of describing his travels that kept me constantly wondering what was going to happen next. Sometimes it was just another innocuous event along the way but sometimes it was some grand adventure or intriguing turn of events. The captivating travel dialog is sprinkled with thoughtful observations on varying topics that really make you think. Materialism, women, religion, politics; the author seems wise beyond his years - possibly a result of a macro view of life obtain through travel. I certainly hope the author is still traveling - and still writing about it.
